First project brief - Detailing of type

Task 1: Detail - Convey the importance of typographic detailing to a specific audience
Recently there has been concern that many of the fundamental principles of typography are being ignored, and the detailing of ‘type’ has become a neglected art. Type is one of the graphic designer’s core tools. The designer uses type to communicate appropriately, to suggest a mood and a character and to contribute to page and layout dynamics. Handled with care and understanding, attention to type detailing will create better communication.

Begin by discovering and researching as much as you can about typographical detailing. For example: kerning, alignment, rivers, widows, orphans, paragraphs, punctuation, leading,1 of 4readability, line widths, tracking etc. there are plenty more for you to discover, but don’t confuse with type anatomy.Choose at least eight typographic details. It is important to have a clear understanding of each ‘detail’ as the graphic explanation of how you apply and use them will be integral to your final design. Convey these eight elements in an imaginative and memorable way. Be adventurous in your thinking. You may wish to look at introducing wit or humour (not cartoons), scale and contrast, connections and or links etc. You may need to devise an appropriate format or container to display or hold these elements.
